Assisted living communities provide a sense of community as well as individualized support. Assisted living communities frequently provide care supervision, help with daily activities, and opportunities for leisurely activity. In certain cases, communities may offer dementia care, hospice, or skilled nursing. In Michigan, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $48,000 . Michigan has a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Department of Human Services licenses regulates this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A comprehensive written assessment that that describes prescribed treatments and medications that must be provided to the community prior to admission, The home must complete a service plan in cooperation with each resident and/or their representative, service plan identifies the individual’s need for services, and service plan identifies the individual’s need for activities. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, three daily meals and snacks must be provided, and Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council. Staff are required to obtain training in a variety of fields. These areas include staff training program based on the home’s program statement, administration of medication, supervision, and safety and fire prevention. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication supervision and administration, proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications, and reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assisting a resident to keep appointments, supervised personal care, medication management, and supporting a resident’s personal and social needs. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21.
