Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which administers supervision, care, and aid to medically stable individuals who do not require skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities usually provide assistance with appointments and transit, support with daily activities, and opportunities for recreational activity. In select situations, communities may offer respite, “aging in place”, or Alzheimer’s care. The monthly median cost for a private room is around $9,292 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $8,373 . Michigan has a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Department of Human Services licenses supervises this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication supervision and administration, proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications, and reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three daily meals and snacks must be provided, Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council, and communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A comprehensive written assessment that that describes prescribed treatments and medications that must be provided to the community prior to admission, service plan identifies the individual’s need for services, The service plan must be updated annually and following a significant change in health status, and service plan takes into account the preferences and competency of the resident. Staff members receive education in a number of areas. These areas include first-aid, personal care, staff training program based on the residents’ service plans, and reporting requirements and documentation. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include being aware of a resident’s general whereabouts, medication management, supervised personal care, and guidance.
