Assisted living communities administer healthcare, social interaction, and oversight to individuals who are about 65 years old. Assisted living communities usually offer assistance with transportation and appointments, help with the activities of daily life, and care supervision. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, “aging in place”, or Alzheimer’s care. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . The state of Maryland has a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene certifies this community type. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance in accessing and coordinating health services, uncomplicated interventions to manage occasional behaviors that might disrupt or harm the resident or others, occasional assistance in accessing social and recreational services, and monitoring and management of occasional psychological or psychiatric episodes or fluctuations that require uncomplicated intervention or support. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff who have passed a Board of nursing program may administer medications, assistance with self-administration of medications, and a licensed health professionall must review each resident’s medication regime within 14 days of admission. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be well-balanced, meals must be varied, meals must be palatable, and programs must provide three meals a day and snacks. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessed on psychiatric conditions, treatment requirements, problematic behaviors, and activities of daily living needs. Staff are required to obtain education in a variety of areas. These include: infection control, health and psychosocial needs, basic first-aid, and state-approved, 5-hour training on cognitive impairment and mental illness.
