An assisted living community is a residential community which provides assistance, support, and care to healthy persons who are not in need of skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities frequently provide support with daily activities, aid with transit and appointments, and opportunities for recreational activity. In some cases, communities may provide dementia care, “aging in place”, or respite. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . Maryland maintains specific standards associated with this type of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene governs this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be of sufficient quantity and quality to meet daily nutritional needs, meals must be well-balanced, meals must be varied, and meals must be palatable. Staff are required to obtain education in a number of subjects. These include: basic first-aid, including standard precautions, infection control, and health and psychosocial needs. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include occasional assistance in accessing social and recreational services, assistance with self-administration of medications, uncomplicated interventions to manage occasional behaviors that might disrupt or harm the resident or others, and monitoring and management of occasional psychological or psychiatric episodes or fluctuations that require uncomplicated intervention or support. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff who have passed a Board of nursing program may administer medications, reminders to take medications, and residents’ ability to self-administer must be reviewed at least quarterly by a licensed health professionall. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a comprehensive mental and physical assessment, problematic behaviors, risk factor management needs, and treatment requirements.
