Assisted living communities provide healthcare, social events, and supervision to persons who are on average 65 years old. Services provided often involve aid with ADLs. Residents may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In select instances, communities may offer hospice, Alzheimer’s care, or continuing care. In Iowa, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $48,933 . The state of Iowa maintains a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Department of Inspections and Appeals, Health communities Division regulates this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include all meals must follow recommendations of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, a health care provider must prescribe a therapeutic diet, a licensed dietitian must be available to write and approve the therapeutic menu, and communities must provide hot meals at least once a day. Staff members receive education in a variety of areas. These areas include assisted living management or nursing course, emergency procedures, accident, and fire safety. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include resident access to a 24-hour personal emergency response system, health-related services, assistance with personal care, and assistance with activities of daily living. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a multidisciplinary team must be involved in service planning when residents require personal care or health-related services, negotiated risk agreement, and a comprehensive mental and physical assessment. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication reminders, reading instructions or other label information, and opening containers. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Elderly Waiver program.
