An assisted living community is an organized living community which offers care, supervision, and aid to independent seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities usually provide assistance with transportation and appointments, supervision of care, and aid with the activities of daily life. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, Alzheimer’s care, or skilled nursing. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . The state of Illinois maintains a number of provisions related to this kind of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health supervises this community type. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include documenting whether or not the resident took the medication, only a licensed health care professionall employed by the community may administer medications, and reading the medication label to residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. The maximum occupancy is 1 residents per room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include laundry, assistance with activities of daily living, non-medical services, and security. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of subjects. These include: privacy, choice, infection control, and disaster procedures. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A comprehensive assessment, assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety, and evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition.
