Assisted living communities administer social opportunities, care, and supervision to individuals around 65 years old. Assisted living communities commonly provide supervision of care, assistance with daily activities, and outings for recreational activity. In select instances, communities may provide respite, skilled nursing care, or “aging in place”. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . Illinois maintains specific rules associated with this type of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health governs this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication reminders, only a licensed health care professionall employed by the community may administer medications, and reading the medication label to residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. In total, there can be no more than 1 residents to a room. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, medication administration, supervision of self-administered medications, and laundry. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A comprehensive assessment, assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s psychosocial condition, and evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition. Staff members receive education in a number of fields. These include: residents’ need and service plans, hygiene, disaster procedures, and abuse.
