Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer healthcare, social interaction, and oversight to individuals around 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities frequently provide support with the activities of daily life, supervision of care, and help with transportation and appointments. In certain instances, communities may provide continuing care, hospice, or Alzheimer’s care. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . The state of Illinois has specific regulations related to this type of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health certifies this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reading the medication label to residents, only a licensed health care professionall employed by the community may administer medications, and medication reminders. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. There is a maximum occupancy of 1 residents per room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include emergency response systems, supervision of self-administered medications, assistance with activities of daily living, and non-medical services. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition, assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, and A comprehensive assessment. Staff members receive education in a number of fields. These areas include abuse, internal policies, privacy, and hygiene. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals.
