Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which offers support, care, and supervision to independent seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities often provide chances for organized activity, care supervision, and help with the activities of daily life. In select cases, communities may offer respite, “aging in place”, or skilled nursing. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . Illinois maintains specific regulations related to this type of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health supervises this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication reminders, housekeeping, supervision of self-administered medications, and emergency response systems. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety, assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition, and A comprehensive assessment. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication reminders, medication administration, and only a licensed health care professionall employed by the community may administer medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. In total, there can be no more than 1 residents to a room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Staff members receive training in a variety of subjects. These include: hygiene, internal policies, privacy, and independence.
