Assisted Living

An assisted living community is an organized living community which provides support, care, and assistance to independent individuals who do not require skilled nursing services. The types of service provided often include support with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide dementia care, hospice, or respite. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . The state of Georgia maintains a number of provisions related to this kind of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes licenses this type of community. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include communities must assist residents with self-administration if requested, applying topical medications, and assisting residents with self-administration. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the resident’s functional capacity with regard to ADLs, A written care plan must document the assessment findings, assessment to determine the resident’s physical care needs, and assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. Staff must obtain education in a variety of subjects. These include: provision of resident care that is individualized and helpful, exploitation of a resident, 24 hours of continuing education during the first year and 16 hours annually thereafter, and hand hygiene. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include administration of medications by a certified medication aide, described as personal services, assisted living care, and the provision of assisted self-preservation.
