Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide supervision, recreational activities, and healthcare to people around 65 years old. The services provided often involve aid with ADLs. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In certain situations, communities may provide continuing care, respite, or hospice. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . Georgia maintains specific standards associated with this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes licenses this type of community. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. Staff are required to obtain education in a number of subjects. These include: hand hygiene, assistance with medications, emergency first-aid and CPR, and training necessary to carry out assigned job duties. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, care plan must be updated at least annually and when there is a change in the resident’s needs, assessment to determine the residents cognitive and behavioral impairments, and A written care plan must document the assessment findings. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include the provision of assisted self-preservation, administration of medications by a certified medication aide, described as personal services, and assisted living care. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting residents with storage of medications, communities must assist residents with self-administration if requested, and placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day.
