An assisted living community is a residential community which administers care, supervision, and aid to healthy individuals who do not need skilled nursing support. Services provided often involve assistance with ADLs. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide nursing, hospice, or Alzheimer’s care. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . The state of Georgia maintains a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes supervises this type of community. Staff are required to obtain training in a number of areas. These include: Medical and social needs and characteristics of the resident population, assistance with medications, general infection control principles, and Residents’ rights. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assisted living care, administration of medications by a certified medication aide, described as personal services, and the provision of assisted self-preservation. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include cognitive and functionally able residents may self-administer medications , applying topical medications, and placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the residents cognitive and behavioral impairments, whether family supports are available, assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, and A written care plan must document the assessment findings. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day.
