An assisted living community is an organized living community which administers support, supervision, and aid to independent seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing care. The types of service provided often include help with ADLs. Residents may be kept under observation and evaluation. In certain instances, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, respite, or continuing care. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . California maintains a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division licenses this community type. Staff members receive education in a variety of areas. These areas include the importance and techniques of personal care services and universal precautions, 10 hours of initial training within the first 4 weeks of employment and 4 additional hours annually, the aging process, and psychosocial aspects of aging. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks, meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds , and meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications and medication administration. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program.
