Assisted living communities have the luxury of apartment style housing and social events as well as individual support. Assisted living communities frequently offer assistance with the activities of daily life, outings for recreational activity, and care supervision. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, skilled nursing care, or Alzheimer’s care. In Arkansas, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $38,100 . Arkansas has specific regulations associated with this type of community. The Arkansas Department of Human Services (DHS), Division of Medical Services, Office of Long Term Care (Office) supervises this type of community. Staff must receive training in a variety of areas. These include: medication assistance and monitoring, building safety and emergency measures, dementia and cognitive impairment, and sanitation and food safety. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Waiver program –the Living Choices Assisted Living Waiver program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include if the resident is physically impaired but cognitively able, staff may assist the resident in removing oral medication from the container and in taking the medication, assistance with self- administration of medication, and community staff may place the dose of medication in another container and place that container to the mouth of the resident. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three balanced meals, snacks, and fluids are required. There must be one toilet for every 2 residents and one bath or shower for every 2 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 4. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with obtaining transportation, assistance with recreational activities , supervision by awake staff, and medication assistance. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as An initial needs assessment, resident’s preference to the identified course of action, compliance agreements, and alternatives offered to deal with the risk.
