An assisted living community is a residential community which offers support, supervision, and aid to independent individuals who do not require skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities frequently offer aid with appointments and transit, supervision of care, and opportunities for organized activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide “aging in place”, hospice, or dementia care. In Alabama, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $39,000 . The state of Alabama has specific regulations related to this kind of community. Department of Public Health, Bureau of Health Provider Standards certifies this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as plan of care developed by the community in cooperation with the resident and, if appropriate, their representative and medical examination by a physician prior to admission. Staff are required to obtain education in a variety of fields. These areas include signs and symptoms of dementia, 19 years of age, nutritional needs of the elderly, and advance directives. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administration of medication if capable. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include housekeeping, medication services, ADL assistance, and general observation and health supervision. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include Alternate food selections must be available for residents on medically prescribed diets, communities must serve daily at least three meals, meals must meet the Dietary Reference Intakes of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council, National Academy of Sciences, and Snacks and beverages must be available throughout the day and after the evening meal. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 2.
