Arts, Culture, Entertainment, and Recreation

The East Coast seatown of Bridgeport is located right on the Atlantic seaboard. The city is known for its majestic shoreline, its fascinating museums, and its dedication to the performing arts. The town’s website lists a number of attractions and events that highlight the best aspects of living in Bridgeport. The Jefferson Ferry provides the best view of the city from the middle of the Long Island Sound. The Beardsley Zoo is one of the most popular attractions in the city boasting five enclosures including a predator enclosure, a South American Rainforest biome, and alligator alley. The top museums in the city include the P.T. Barnum museum which commemorates the one-time mayor and local legend. Located downtown in Barnum’s terra cotta mansion, the museum has a number of artifacts that serve as reminders to the dark and storied history of the American circus. The Discovery Museum is dedicated to science and learning and is a great place for the whole family to learn more about the natural world.

The city of Bridgeport prides itself on its dedication to the arts. The Housatonic Museum of Art has a wide collection of pieces from the 1700s, 1800s and 1900s. They also feature pieces made by students at the nearby Housatonic College. The Downtown Cabaret Theatre is a historical building and one of the premiere performing arts venues in the city. The 1,500-seat Klein Memorial Auditorium is home to the Greater Bridgeport Symphony, the New England Ballet Company, and the Greater Bridgeport Youth Orchestras.

For those who enjoy outdoor recreation there is Seaside Park. The park is 325 acres large and has over three miles of coastline that is dotted with beaches. The park was designed by the same person who designed Central Park in New York City and includes a wildlife preserve and a lighthouse. Fairchild Wheeler is the city’s municipal golf course and offers two 18-hole courses that are open to the public.

Transportation

There are not many public transportation options available within the city and a car may be necessary to get around. The Metro-North commuter line offers daily service to New York City, and regional service to the surrounding areas. Bridgeport also has a stop along Amtrak’s regional East Coast train line.
