Great Community

I chose this community because I wanted to be near Oakland. The community is not the most convenient location, there is only two bus routes that pass by the community but there is a bus stop in front of the community. The community also has its own van service that will take you places if needed. They do trips to shopping centers and grocery stores. They have plenty of activities to keep the residents busy. The food is pretty good and there are so very nice common areas. I was research several other communities but only visited this one and once I saw Schenley Gardens I didn't bother visiting any others. I am pretty happy with it and would recommend it to anyone.

Truly not an unworthy experience.

As this was my first experience in even picking a place for my sister to stay for a while, nothing prepares you for all the decisions to be made. I liked that the community was very close to my sister's own apartment. Most of the amenities are included in the prices quoted. A few problems arose in light of my sister is wheelchair bound. She was having problems getting showered at her set times and the apartment was getting cleaned up to her standards. Most of the people are very sympathetic to your concerns and we managed to plow through these few problems.

Mixed experience

Our experience with Schenley Gardens has been somewhat mixed, but overall I think they do a good job. The facility itself is well kept and clean, and the staff all seemed friendly, but I think some of their services could stand some improvement. Their intake process could use some work, getting my loved one moved in was definitely not a smooth process. I also wish they'd offer a few more activities in the evening, things pretty much shut down after dinner and my night owl loved one is often has nothing to do but sit in her room.

Community Tour

When I toured Vincentian Home, I did not see the apartments, but I saw the home itself. And it was very disappointing. They had no social activities whatsoever. It seemed to me like a warehouse for the aged.

Did not meet expectations

I was very unhappy with the moving in process and then when I was told my mom needed to move to a secure unit because she was exit seeking. Very disappointed in the lack of activities they had for her in the secured unit and food was being served out of a Styrofoam container, not on dishes. We moved my mom out in October or November of 2022. So happy we did. She gained a significant amount of weight and had additional health issues while there. In fact, the water in her shower was NEVER warm. It was cold, I often wondered how they bathed her, it was a really traumatic experience for her. I had to bring in/hire additional help when my mom stayed there. I would not recommend this facility at all! Staff communication was also very, very poor. The receptionist was never pleasant, in fact, she was very rude. When we moved mom out no one ever followed up with me to discuss the issues there. When I visited my mom there, I felt more depressed and concerned about her being there than when she lived at home alone.

Bad experience

I am clicking on one star - and for good reason. A lot of people, I feel are mislead by the 5* banner in the front of the building (including our family). I cannot say enough about the rehab side of the building. They were kind, helpful and all concerns were addressed - including emotional support. But my mother-in-law had to be moved to longterm care ; not making enough progress in rehab to go home, or even to our home. The care at the longterm side of the facility is minimal at best. Unfortunately, the first care meeting coincided with another very important personal family matter we were dealing with, so we were never able to attend one; just asked a lot of questions to whomever we could manage to talk to (not knowing who), were handed a lot of phone numbers to conduct our own investigations of matters at hand, with Mom. In the 3+ months we had our loved one there, we never "qualified" for another care meeting (they are only conducted every three months), so we never actually knew her "status" the entire time. We even tried to have a meeting, after she passed, to have "resolve" - but they wouldn't allow (where I know nursing homes CAN do this). So, because of this , we were never introduced to how things work (because we missed the only offered care meeting / and financial review), and for that reason, did not ever have a good feel for who are the right contacts / people / to even get in touch if questions needed answered. So then, I feel, families are always scrambling to find information, or a nurse. They only provide ONE nurse on the floor at any given time, and good luck if you need them, or information. If I would find a nurse (with a concern), a lot of times, they did not know answers to any questions we had ; if they even had some information, often times we would find it was incorrect. Sometimes, we would find they had not even seen the patient yet that day (at 10:30 am????). I realize they are busy, and I suppose if the whole floor is your responsibility, that may be the case ... but why is this happening? If you just need an aide to help , often times they were hard to find as well. In the earlier months my Mom-in-law was there, she was often times very frustrated for having no one return her page for help soon enough, so she would try to do things herself, or have 'accidents' while waiting. This to me, is totally unacceptable !! To make matters even worse, if we called with concerns or even frustrations for not having the right contacts, or enough help, the front desk was often rude, and would comment, "I am only a receptionist ... I don't know who to get for you." While we were trying to get a grasp on finances, we finally (after asking for assistance for three months) were sent a bill, and found it was so astronomical because they did not send billing to us when they should have. And forget the social worker ; when we tried resorting to her for help, we found she was constantly covering her bases with psuedo-explanations for the why's or what happened - and attitude to boot, instead of continuing forward with better help. For $8000.00 a month (our personal out of pocket expense !! ) I / we expected MUCH better care, professionalism, and respect. The facility is beautiful, but outside of rehabilitation and activities, there is multi system failures we experienced, and I know I am not alone .... there was a "family pow-wow" in the hallway one day, sharing frustrations, and that they had many of the same concerns. As much as they want to claim meeting all government regulations, I have seen much better !!! People need to know this - when choosing. And the banner outside is false - advertising.

Do NOT put your loved ones in this facility

Do not put your loved one in this facility. My father was a resident for 2 1/2 years before he passed. To start, we didn't know until recently that their license application was rejected by the state and, therefore, have been operating under a temporary license in hopes that they will be approved. The last we heard, it was unlikely to happen. Although we can't confirm that it was staff members, someone kept stealing my fathers stuff (phone charges, TV remote, money, toiletries, etc). The staff repeatedly consumed his store bought food without asking and would use his living room as if it were there personal breakroom while he was confined to this bedroom. If you look them up, there are multiple complaints with the state so please do your homework and "buyer beware" if you choose to put your loved one there!

I would never go here

I would never ever go there, I do not recommend. To begin with, they haven’t had heat in the first floor, in any of the elevators, or in the halls for at least a week. They are now going into their second week with their residents dealing with the cold. My love one fortunately has a heater in her unit, however there are many tenants that are complaining about it. No one seems to be working on it. It hard to talk to anyone to receive any information for anyone. When people go to the dining area to eat, they are wearing coats and hats just to stay warm. Sometimes they just take their meals up to their rooms. I believe that my love one is not getting very good care there. I have called the Elder Care in this county and they put me through the department that are sending an inspector to the facility itself to check out the place. However, I’m not sure how long it would actually take them to resolve this issue. Again I would never go there

Questioning Our Choice

My resident is in personal care at Schenley. The good news is that this place appears to be clean; it hasn't smelled or appeared dirty when I've visited. The bad news: Twice I've found fecal matter on the one and only towel in my resident's room--no one wants to dry their hands anywhere near that towel-- and I got fresh sets after hunting down someone to help. Three staff members have been conversationally pleasant. One of the three is outstanding with her welcoming demeanor and helpful attitude. Other staff members aren't welcoming to family members; they make eye contact but that's it--an impassive stare that screams, "What do you want"? We are polite and respectful. They can't crack a smile or even act like we have any business there--it's a bother to answer a question. Finally, ALL of the chairs and sofas are too low for the elderly, infirm residents to get out of without a struggle. WHY?

Stay away

Do not place anyone you care about here. Untrained staff, most often on their cellphones or in personal conversations rather than attending to residents. Dirty environment, unclean residents, ongoing theft issues. No individualization to care, no responsiveness to needs. Poor administrative response to issues, locally and at home office.

Terrible choice

I am a friend of a resident. The level of care is terrible. The staff hates it when an outsider is observing them . Even worse is the administration and management. It is run by an out of state company who has no ties to the Pittsburgh community and no interest in doing anything for the quality of life of the residents. I know it is hard to find a good place but this is terrible.

Beware!

Had our loved one in the memory care unit on the 5th floor. This place is just awful. Anytime I was there and asked for help with my family member it seemed like a huge inconvenience to the aides. They were constantly on their phones and in no hurry to assist anyone. My resident always had dirty stained clothing on and was never changed. After our family member passed away they returned the unused meds to us. There was such a surplus we wondered if they were giving the medicine as prescribed. I advise you to do your homework and ask questions of residents relatives before choosing a nursing home. We learned the hard way.

If only there were a "0" star rating

Beware before signing anything here. Get everything in writing, and if possible notarize everything anyone at Schenley Gardens gives you. My mother was here for a few months. The care was sub standard at best, the food appalling and the management changed so often there was no one with whom to communicate. The floor she was on smelled of urine and when I pointed that out, our 'tour guide' replied that you have to expect those odors in an assisted living place. We were charged for many services we did not receive and since we didn't document every missed service, we had no recourse. I suggest consulting with an attorney before agreeing to have a family member live at Scheney Gardens. I challenge anyone to eat a week's worth of meals here. There are far better places in Pittsburgh that charge way less money. The convenience of the Oakland location is not worth the horror of having anyone live here.
