A suburb of Indianapolis, Carmel has a unique urban feel due to the city’s extensive downtown development campaign. The city has a thriving city center and an Art and Design District that features interior designers, art galleries, showrooms, and specialty shops and restaurants. The recently-developed Midtown Plaza offers fine dining at trendy restaurants and plenty of boutique stores to fulfill all of your shopping needs. Getting around the city is a breeze as there are 200 miles of trails and paths that weave throughout the neighborhoods. The city also puts on a number of events throughout the year including one of the largest farmers’ markets in the state of Indiana. The Carmel Farmers Market (CFM) features sixty-four local Indiana vendors and is attended by nearly 80,000 visitors each summer. With so much activity to offer, it is no wonder that Carmel is consistently ranked as one of the best suburbs in the country to live.
The city also boasts a number of museums and other attractions that provide tons of opportunity for recreation and leisure. Scattered throughout the Art and Design District are a number of sculptures, which can provide a nice opportunity for a walking tour of the neighborhood. The Carmel Clay Historical Society operates a museum out of the old Monon Train Depot, featuring artifacts and exhibits on local history. The Museum of Miniatures features a wide collection of antique doll houses, toy figures, collectible porcelain dolls, and other hand crafted miniature art. The Guiness World Record for Smallest Children’s Art Gallery is located in the Arts & Design District, as well.
When it comes to outdoor activity, Carmel does not disappoint, with over 500 acres of city-maintained park land. There are also a number of private and public golf courses located in the city. These include the city-owned Brookshire Golf Club, which has 18 holes, and the 206-acre Prairie View Golf Club.
Transportation
The city of Carmel is working on developing its public transportation capabilities. Currently, public transportation is available between Indianapolis and Carmel via the IndyGo Redline. Prime Life Enrichment offers a cost-free private bus service to seniors who live within Hamilton County. They offer door-to-door, non-emergency bus services to residents who are 55 years or older.
