Our tour experience
Sandra - Toured community
Our family had an in person tour and we really liked Merrill Gardens, the place is beautiful, but the rooms on the memory care side were so so small. However, just for a normal intimate living setting would be great, but the memory care rooms were just to small.
My fathers final days

My father moved into the independent living part in 2017. We chose MG for continuity of care .As his dementia worsened he moved to the memory care section in 2018. They seem to have a revolving door of care givers and directors who do not have the understanding and training necessary for advanced dementia patients. During the Covid quarantine when we were not able to visit my fathers condition worsened. Rather than see it for what it was he was deemed difficult to deal with and was neglected. We were NEVER notified of his worsening condition. After at least 2 falls that we know about we were finally notified (by the paramedics). I was able to see him. He had been left alone outside in direct sun. No shoes. No hat. No water. He had collapsed. He was dehydrated and disoriented. When I finally was able to get him to his room (with minimal assistance from staff) I found it filthy. No sheets on the bed. Garbage, waste, dirty clothes everywhere. Needless to say we immediately looked for and found a new home for him and had him moved within 10 days down the street to Brookdale Oceanside. It was night and day. The staff are very well trained, compassionate towards residents and family members, and treated my father with dignity. They recognized immediately that he should be on hospice. He was cared for and respected. My father was terminal. He passed away within 3 weeks of moving him. He was able to let go in a peaceful, clean, supportive environment with dignity. Not in the squalor he had been forced to live in at Merrill Gardens
Memory Care facility was neither compassionate nor communicative with family

I am disappointed and angered over how a close family member was treated by the director of the Merrill Gardens Memory Care facility. I am extremely close with my half-sisters, and when their father became a resident at MG, in 2017, I helped move him in and was very involved with his transition to the facility. He was initially part of the Assisted Living community, but by May 2018 he needed to be moved to Memory Care. This was when things started to go wrong. First off, within 2 years there have been 3 different directors of the Memory Care facility, which is a huge red flag in and of itself. The current director, [name removed], was by far the worst. I realize that patients with dementia or Alzheimer's can be very difficult to deal with, but we as a family hoped that staff would be adequately trained to deal with any problems, and the director would be both compassionate and communicative with us. She was neither. Before the shutdown caused by Covid-19, my sisters tried to have a constructive conversation with [name removed] about their father's care, but she didn't seem interested in listening to them. This might have been overlooked if he was receiving quality care, and if my family was kept in the loop about how he was deteriorating mentally. But the director failed on both counts. First off, there were staff members who became good at dealing with him; he liked them and had developed a rapport with them. For some reason, [name removed] decided to remove them from his case. I understand as a director she needs to move people around when the need arises. But difficult patients who act out because their independence is being taken from them need consistency, need to know they are dealing with the same reliable, kind people that have helped them in the past. Again, this doesn’t seem that major but it only gets worse. He fell TWICE, and the first time no one in his family was notified! The second fall was very bad; on [date removed], he was found collapsed on the patio and paramedics were called. He had been left alone on the patio for two hours! He was dehydrated, disoriented, and sunburned. And the only reason anyone in the family was notified was because the PARAMEDICS called my sister, not Merrill Gardens! Why was he left to fend for himself out in the hot sun? Bring him an umbrella to protect him! Give him a glass of water and MAKE SURE he drinks it! Coax him back into his room! Our family will be the first to admit he isn’t the easiest person to deal with; the disorientation that overwhelms him can make him angry, and sometimes he’ll even lash out. But the fact that he was just given up on, that my sisters weren’t informed of his condition, this is simply inexcusable. While there, she discovered that his room was a mess and no sheets were on his bed. By the time we finally moved him out on [date removed], it appeared that has room hadn’t been cleaned in months. From his doorway we could see other rooms benefitting from deep cleanings, but when we moved his bed we found dirty pillow cases, handkerchiefs, paper towels and giant dust bunnies, even plastic cups with old food. Also, many items of clothing went missing, including a few pairs of shoes (he had NO SHOES AT ALL when we came to move him out!). A reputable Memory Care facility MUST do a better job at taking care of the elders in its community. He now resides in a much better and more caring facility, and we would not recommend Merrill Gardens at all.
Overall, a place to consider anonymous - Loved one of resident/client
The staff at Merrill Gardens is constantly keeping the community maintained, whether that be touching up paint or ensuring the elevators are clean. On occasion, my parents say some of the staff is not quite as friendly as they should be, but at the same time, others are great. The care services are good, however sometimes the staff can be a little slow to respond to care requests. The community provides good activities for residents to participate in as well. Merrill Gardens is a good value for the care and services provided, however it is a little on the expensive side.

Merrill Gardens is perfect for me.

Tour guide was very personable and thorough, but the place was not easy to navigate. Parking was not close to the entrance and the star shaped hallways were confusung, even for me who doesn't have mental issues.

After extensive research we chose Merrill Gardens in Oceanside for my grandmother suffering from Alzheimer's. Our experience was nothing short of a complete nightmare from the beginning. The Director of Memory Care quit the week before we moved my grandmother in. So essentially there was no oversight for the first month and shortly thereafter the head nurse was fired (probably for her incompetence that we encountered on several occassions). [Name removed], the Director of the facility was often unreachable, made excuses, and seemed ineffective. We, including my grandfather, were told not to visit her for the first week so that she could "adjust". After 5 days, we went to visit her and she had a large bruise on the side of her face that no one could explain. Over the course of the next months, my grandmother fell 5 times in common areas with no witnesses even though there were at least 6 people on duty. My grandmother often appeared dirty with greasy hair and stinky, soiled clothing. Caregivers often would be sitting in a corner of the room chatting with each other instead of caring for the residents. The only bright spot at Merrill Gardens was [name removed], who runs the activities for residents several times a week. She was fun, attentive, and interacted nicely with everyone Other than her, this facility provides an appalling level of care (including neglect and possible abuse that we experienced) that I would never subject anyone to, especially a loved one in need. And ironically, they are one of the more expensive facilities and charge a whopping $4000 one time fee just to move in. We removed her from this facility as quickly as possible. Keep your loved ones away from this place!!
Residents Must be Mobile anonymous - Toured community
I was scheduled to tour this community on behalf of my mother. At that time, my mother was non-weight bearing because of an accident. I called to schedule a tour and I was advised that the community did not take anyone who was non-weight bearing. I did not bother to actually go on the tour, but I feel this is an important item to note if others are looking into the community.
Great care for dad anonymous - Loved one of resident/client
This is a good community for my father's care. I like knowing that the community is clean and maintained. The menu is outstanding and we have liked the meals with my father. The activities are offered for him to participate and we hope he will join the other residents and participate. We do recommend this community for the care and good value for other families and their loved ones.

Mom enjoyed herself in the year and a half she was there. She loved the staff here they were friendly and nice. The food was good. The community was always clean and looked nice didn't have any odors or smells. Mom really had the time of her life here. It was such a great experience for her but as time went on and her dementia progressed the level of care exceeded what they could provide for her so we had to move her to another location.
Improvements could be made!! anonymous - Loved one of resident/client
My mother has recently made the move into this community and she is slowly getting adjusted. The staff could use better consistency in there quality of care that that they have been providing my mother. I have not been that impressed with the caregivers and hope to see some improvement shortly. For the most part my mom is liking the meals and I am hoping to see her get involved in some of the activities they have to offer shortly. Although there are some struggles things are going okay and I would recommend it to anyone.

Lots of activities for a good price! anonymous - Loved one of resident/client
My mother moved here recently and is still adjusting. She isn't participating much in activities but she is meeting new people. I had lunch with her recently and it was very good. I chose this community because I liked the restaurant style dining and it's close to shopping. They offer a spa and hair parlor as well. I liked the amenities they offer for the price.

Need Better Communication!! anonymous - Loved one of resident/client
When the staff make changes they don't communicate very well. I have to be calling to update and make sure everything is going well. The meals provided are good my loved one likes that the dining is open from 7am-7pm. The quality of the food is good and healthy. I would recommend them to friends and family it would be helpful if the communication did get better.

No Complaints From My Wife anonymous - Loved one of resident/client
This community is very nice and well kept. My wife is happy here and she is getting a lot of personal attention from the staff. The community is outstanding and since my wife can't move around much, it appears to me the staff has given my mom a craft box to enjoy. The food is good to my wife and she has not yet to complain about anything. My wife likes everything available to her and I am happy too.
Very Friendly Residents anonymous - Loved one of resident/client
My father is doing well here at Merrill Gardens. They are doing a great job caring for him. The other community we had him at could not provide the level of care he needed. It looks great and smells good and very well-kept. He is still adjusting and the staff has been very helpful in that. Everyone is kind and friendly. They do offer nice activities for the residents. The residents really like the food. We are happy he is safe and getting the care he needs.

A Positive Experience anonymous - Toured community
I think it was a smooth process. The woman that was in charge of the facility is real good with the family and has wonderful people skills, so overall it was a very positive experience with the Merrill Gardens.

Nice place, some disappointments anonymous - Loved one of resident/client
The facility is very clean. Rooms are a nice size. For the most part the staff is always very friendly. I have only noticed one person who does not smile or acknowledge us, acts very cold. My mother complains about the food. Hot foods served cold, eggs that look like they sat in water, toast that is not toasted, rubbery waffles, everything served in disposable dishes (paper cups, plates, bowls, cheap plastic utensils), sometimes very slow service. The day we moved her in, we were very disappointed that no one greeted her. If we had not stayed the whole day, she would have just sat in her room. We took her to the dining room twice. I showed her where the salon was. A week after she was there, I showed her where the library was located, the laundry room, game room. We walked around the second and third floor. The second week she met some ladies, played bingo, had her hair done, seemed content. Third week, she had more friends and is more outgoing. I felt it was a very rough beginning that got better every day. However, she still complains about the food.
