Very nice!
We toured The Cottages at Dartmouth Village during our search for an Assisted Living facility for our loved one. This facility was very nice! [Name removed] was great! Very friendly, clean place, good atmosphere. The residents were all cheerful. However, the outside walkway was too steep for my loved one to walk around.

Total lack of communication
This was another awful experience that my loved one had. He was there for only 24 hours and they shipped him out without my knowledge or permission and I was there all the time they never even had a problem they shipped him out for a medication modification.

Cottages and wonderful care in Dartmouth
Our Dad has received wonderful care at the Cottages at Dartmouth Village. Having suffered a stroke, we wanted to bring him closer to home. He is in a closed unit with other residents that have memory needs. We were very concerned as Dad wanders. We are very happy that Dad is safe and happy at the Cottages. I love the way it is set up so that Dad can meet and talk with a small group of residents within his unit. Eating together at a certain time creates a family-like environment. The staff is wonderful! They are caring and attentive. They know each resident and do their best to make sure all are having a positive day. There are activities to help with his memory. He has fun and continues to work in a positive direction. The staff works to get everyone involved. The Cottages has a beautiful facility. Even the birds are happy in the trees. Gardens are meticulously taken care of too. A great amount of care reflects in all at the Cottages!

Overall a great place for my mother-in-law.
It's an amazing place, although the transition was incredibly difficult because of my mother-in-law's character. But the staff seemed to care and did their best to help. I just wish they had more information for us on how to deal with an agitated family member with dementia, especially video resources vs. just written. She seems to be doing better now, although that can be minute by minute. So remember to have patience with your loved one. Those ups and downs are part of the dementia process. But they staff at The Cottages are amazing. They're helpful and friendly. And they do a good job getting her showered and dressed for the day. It's a very nice facility, so much so that my mother-in-law thinks she's at a resort.

Wife can change on a dime
The administration from the executive director to the memory care director are truly amazing. They are in constant communication with us, the staff and their care services are a 5 plus. The nursing staff are wonderful, they are so caring and go above and beyond. The RN's who administer the medicine are consistent and amazing. The community is very clean, and even though times are tough with the covid pandemic, but they have done a great job keeping as many activities going as they can. The value for cost is tough to judge but we cannot put a price on our loved ones care, everything is worth it and working out so far.

Exceptional
It is a beautiful community with wonderful grounds. The staff are warm and friendly. They are very appreciative of any time you spend there with your loved one and are welcoming to the family. Some of the activities include parties, trips in the van, exercises, walks around the gardens, music, and more for the residents to choose from.

Great Senior Living but NOT good Dementia care.
Overall well maintained nice environment, friendly staff, great food, highly recommend for regular senior living but would NOT recommend the dementia units. They do not have enough properly trained staff to manage the needs of dementia residents. The house doctor does not prescribe medications as needed, instead residents are constantly bounced back and forth to the ER for UTI's and to psych hospitals for anxiety. They have fun activities for regular seniors but the dementia patients miss out because they need someone to guide them to join the activity. I would give this facility 4.5 stars for senior living, but only 2 stars for dementia care.

Look Somewhere Else!
Brookdale sold me on a bunch of promises which they couldn't fulfill, very disappointing and regretful, is my experience. This is really a place for more outgoing seniors. The activities aren't very fun; I would describe them as "canned." I also felt my mother wasn't cared for very well, rather left to fend for herself and find her own way. However, what really made me angry is the fact that the staff STOLE from my mother! They stole an iPad and did very little, except to say, "sorry about that, we'll keep an eye out for it." As for the promise of caring for Mom "all the way to hospice." - Not a chance. Not only was that a false promise, Brookdale doesn't have the professional staff to offer a promise of that nature. Brookdale has no 24/7 RN but they charge more than a certified SNF without shame. I would NOT recommend this place, even if I was in good health at 60 years old... because the food also stinks! Find a better place for your Mom or Pop, Brookdale is a pass after my experience.

Fell short of my expectations
The first impressions were great; looks clean, no smell, and told about activities. My mom was in the memory care so the doors were locked all the time. You need someone to let you in and out. There were times when I was visiting there where I couldn't find anyone around to let me out. I was also felt nickel and dimed over things. I didn't want some services but were forced to pay for them. We were encouraged to let them take care of the medication but a few times when I was there they, we were giving the wrong medication. I know it is hard to manage all of the different residents but there was a resident that constantly went into rooms taking things. The good news is the staff knew where to retrieve the stuff. Eventually we needed to lock the door when not in the room. The big disappointment is mom fell and no one was able to say what had happened. She ended up with a broken hip and they felt the risk was too much to take her back even though they provide care for people in wheel chairs. It was difficult to communicate with them during this time. Emails were not returned and their charges were automatically deducted from mom's account. After 2 months we were able to leave and have found a new place for her. She can now walk with a walker when she has too. We wish the communication was better with the front office and that they payment reduction plan when you are paying for an empty room (2 month after they refuse to take her back). At one point a relative came to visit and the caregiver unlocked the door and discovered mom was not there and didn't know why. This was a couple weeks after she had left. Maybe the communication with the staff could be better too.

Great layout and staff!
The thing that I personally love and made me think Brookdale is a good fit for my aunt is the layout of the community. They have cottages with 10-15 people per cottage. I've come to know everyone very well and know them on a first name basis. There are some amazing workers and some you can tell that are there because it's a job. [Removed] in Dogwood does an amazing job and I call her the Alzheimer's whisperer. [Removed] does a great job too! They are so kind and show so much empathy and concern. I'm always observing and watching how they treat other residents. It puts me at ease knowing they treat my aunt the same when I'm not around.

Outstanding care for mom
I am happy with the care that my mother is getting here. I am happy knowing the staff is really good to her and assisting her with all her needs. I have had a meal with my mom and the food here is outstanding. She is very active with many of the activities that are offered. I would highly recommend the care that is given and the good value to other families.

The care was excellent.
Mom especially liked the food at Emeritus, I think that meals were the high point of her day. I think she liked the Homey feel of the site, as it reminded her of her last home. I think the nice music at meals was soothing, and helped her agitation. She also liked having her nails done. I do think that it would be good to add one more aide to the floor so that there was always someone present when the residents were "watching" television. The staff was very caring and solicitious, but I think that there should be at least one more "floater" available. I was saddened to find that the original manager (?Monica?) was out due to illness and could not return... I thought that her energy and focus was fabulous and it was one of the reasons that I placed Mom at Emeritus. Unfortunately, Mom had several falls at Emeritus and she fractured both hips which necessitated placement in a nursing facility. I am dismayed that regulations prohibit safety belts both in assisted living and nursing homes, as I think that that prohibition promotes falls, subsequent fractures and ultimately higher morbidity and mortality.

Nice place, overall!
Overall things have gone well at Emeritus at Dartmouth! The facility itself is well kept and clean, and the staff have been very friendly and helpful! Communications between the staff and the families could be improved, however. My loved one was given her medication incorrectly despite my having told another staff member the appropriate way to do it. It also took quite a while before they go around to getting her phone service set up.

The people were very helpful, during the short time we were there. There were some things that they weren't able to accommodate for, like rails on the bed. They were good while we were there, and they called us right away when there was a fall. It just wasn't the right place for our needs.

A Place for Mom has scored The Cottages at Dartmouth Village 7.9 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score.
