They're just after the money. They don't hire enough staff in the dining room. The food is not very good but they won't invest in a good chef. Half the time my loved oneleaves there hungry and I have to buy snacks. We picked this community, because it was close and they made it sound so good. It's decorated so nicely and I really liked it. I had no idea that some of the aides were so mean.

I toured this facility and it was great! They didn't offer the level of care I wanted to prepare for should my loved one need it, so due to that not our first choice. But in general, high scores for them!

I toured The Saybrook; it's a very nice facility and I was very impressed. We put a deposit down on a very nice 2 bedroom place that we were ready to act on, but my mom passed away so it changed some things. It would have been further away than what would have been convenient for us. The community we chose has been a real sweet spot in regards to distance and location.
Not sure why positive comments. Horrible facility as they don't abide by care plan or notify family of concerns. My aunt's legs were swollen almost twice her normal size because rhis place doesn't elevate her legs! This can lead to a stroke and discomfort/pain. They claim she won't raise them which is BS. But if that was true, she has a recliner, put her in that and elevate her legs. She wouldn't be able to get out of the chair herself so no worries. At least she won't die from a blood clot!!!

I am comfortable that my mother is in a safe place. I think the staff are very nice. My mom tells me she enjoys the activities, and she likes playing bingo and cards. The food I tried was delicious, although Mom is less thrilled with it. I think it's a good place overall but a little pricey.

The Saybrook was a very nice place, all one level, and a beautiful facility. We came very close to moving in. They came to our home to do the assessment, but they said they were just not ready for him to move in. I'm not sure exactly why, although it could have been related to the pandemic. We needed more immediate placement, so we ended up selecting a different place.
My 103 year old mother has been here since spring [date removed] (with a summer off in Nantucket). We have been very impressed with the personalized service from all the staff, including professional care from the nurses. My mother had to recover from a fall and staff worked closely with my family to make sure that my mother got the care she needed to recover as much of her activities as possible in a safe and appropriate manner. The facility seems more like a Marriott than an assisted living facility. The food is surprisingly good, including wine at dinner. There are smaller private dining areas for family events, which we have used for than once. I could not imagine my mother at any other facility. I sleep well at night knowing my mother is safe and just five minutes away. The pool table is great too...

Very cordial, prettily decorated for the holidays, nice layout. They have the “age in place” of three levels of care which I am looking for.

We just received a call that mom was found on the floor in her apartment bleeding from her head. My family and I have tried calling back the facility several times, letting the phone ring for 5 minutes straight and NO ONE answered. This is a repeat occurrence but now we're really unhappy. I think there is one person at night currently for an entire assisted living AND memory care facility due to turnover of staff A nurse is on call at night but not on site. Starting to realize this is a mistake. The grounds are beautiful but the caregiver to resident ratio is not enough.

My father is doing very well with his move to this community. This was good move for him, and his needs. I do feel comfortable with his move to this facility. This is beautiful, and they do a great job with cleanliness around the community. The staff is very helpful, and the administration is very helpful as well. He is pleased with the meals they provide. They have two wonderful activities directors in this facility, and they provide wonderful activities for the residents. We are pleased with everything they have done for our family, and I would definitely recommend this community.

Response from Commonwealth Senior Living at Haddam
August 28, 2017On behalf of our staff I would like to thank you for your kind comments. We are all very pleased that your Dad has had a positive transition. We will continue to everything we can to make him comfortable in his new home. Dave Downey
We were very impressed with our tour. The folks living there seemed happy and relaxed. The staff (especially Dave Downey) were kind and very knowledgable. The building actually smelled nice and the food, served w/ wine, also smelled great. The cost, although high, was about the same as mom's place in NY.

Overall, I think it's a very nice facility, I think the care is okay, it's hard for me to really assess because I'm not there very often. I can say that she gets her medcation very well everyday, but I don't know how frequently the nursing staff or the doctor sees her. When I ask my sister, the kind of answers I'm getting from her aren't very clear. She's a very private person and very selective on what she does. She had been in a place in New York before so she had the experience of what a facility is like and I think this facility is superior from a phsyical standpoint. The building is beauitful, well maintained, the activities they have are quite comparable to what they had in New York, she would say "they're all the same" but she's quite ciritcal. I don't think I could satisfy her wherever I put her, I'm never going to get her to say "this is wonderful," but as far as I'm concerned, you can't get a better value in this area.

It is a very nice place. Really clean with no foul odors. I like the fact that it’s smaller than other places with more personalized care. Mom gets the one on one treatment and attention that she needs and the other people look happy as well. The grounds outside are under repair, they are redoing them and making the grounds bigger. The food is fair; mom likes some of the food and others not so much. I wish that they would have a better selection of meals. The people are very pleasant and nice. The only drawback is that they don’t have much of a choice when it comes to activities for people that have pore eyesight.
