One of the best value for what your pay in the Hampton Roads area
Charles - Child of resident/client
It is a great place to be. There is not a nurse or medical staff on hand. This is a great value for what you pay in the area. There was an issue with water bugs that I addressed with the administration and they tried to fix it for my loved ones quickly.
The food I have tasted was good. Karaoke, bingo, poker, horse derby, singing, team building activities, and more are available for the residents to choose from.
Tour of Colonial Harbor

We did a virtual tour with Colonial Harbor and we really liked the facility. It looked beautiful from what I could see but the location is too far from things.
Family experience anonymous - Child of resident/client
The meal service was available all the time, and it was always delivered in a timely fashion so that would be a five out of five. However, our loved ones who are there say the quality of the food was not all that great, it was not appetizing or palatable. Under the circumstances the activities were limited, but they still tried to do as much as they could while social distancing. It is expensive, but when your in a retirement community where everything is all inclusive, the value is worth it.
Not what we were expecting anonymous - Child of resident/client
Initially at first it was not that bad, but once covid hit the food quality was terrible and it just got worse and worse.

The Staff and my neighbors here are wonderful. I have a volunteer job working at our community store while I feel very needed. I have lived here over 4 years and it's my home !

This community has been an ideal place for my wife and me, as it provided a community with people around. After she passed I was not left alone. I had place a live with activity.
I also find myself meeting a number of others and having relaxed time with them.

We moved my Mother in law to Colonial Harbor in March of 2017. My newly widowed father was so impressed that he too became a resident at Colonial Harbor the following June. We can't say ..... things about C.H. ...... The , caring and compassionate and the facility, always clean and tidy.

you can't help but feel the hospitality and Friendships of the staff and people who live and work here. Friends I've made here are the very best, there is always someone ready to make your day better. One of the best things is I don't have to clean or cook. I love my apartment and to talk to the staff.

Absolutely Wonderful !
From the time I started calling to get information for my mom to moving, Colonial Harbor has been great. The Staff is extremely caring and helpful. I can't thank them enough for all they do for my mom and me. I highly recommend this wonderful community.
I love to play bingo and talking to people. I enjoy getting out to get fresh air and sit and chat. I enjoy living here at colonial harbor.
I have a place to stay and the people are friendly. The staff is very very helpful. My apartment suits me fine and is very nice.
Please don't go here Jackie Tate - Loved one of resident/client
I would want other families to know when looking into Colonial Harbor for their loved ones that they treated us different after we signed the bottom line. They were helpful until we signed, then we couldn't get an answer about anything from anybody. My dad has lost a lot of weight since he has been there and so have a lot of other residents. They have cut down on their food portions. I wrote to the corporate office and they did not respond. One of the advantages they had that helped us make the decision was that they had a bus service, many times the bus has not been up and running so I had to drive to get him and take him to and from his appointments. They use to offer cleanings once a week and now since COVID, they are cleaning every other week so we have had to hire someone to come in and clean. Overall, I would not recommend this facility.

I feel the staff has done an excellent job of keeping us safe but recently there has been a lax in enforcing the mask required policy. I have seen both residents and staff not following the protocol as a result we have had two testing of the virus in the last three weeks. I only hope they enforce the restrictions they have stated they have and continue to keep us safe.

Colonial Harbor has had some ups and downs. Most recently the management team has gotten a new chef. The meals have been above and beyond. They have the best value in town. [Name removed] and [name removed] are giving the residents very fun events and activities.

My sisters-in-laws mother lives here. I find the food to be uneatable and risk to the health of the people living here. It is not acceptable to serve raw meat or over cooked meat. Why hasn’t the state or the county intervened to make sure that the residents are being feed a “healthy” diet? As people age their healthy and nutrition are of high importance and can have an effect on their quality of life. They have been told their “work on it”. What steps have they taken to make sure that no one gets sick from food that has not been prepared correctly? To me, it is much cheaper and should be a high priority to the staff to make sure the food is served above and beyond the requirements that are required by state and county. I surely wouldn’t want anyone else that I love to be hungry or malnutrited because of the serves provide at this facility.
Not what was promised

I have a family member at this location. Lots of promises in the beginning, then it all went downhill. Biggest problem is the meals. You would expect quality meals considering it's part of the package and a selling point they really push. Not the case. Undercooked or overcooked meals are the norm. Most meals are sent back. This has been going on for many, many months. It's not a fluke or a bad food order. DON'T CHOOSE COLONIAL HARBOR. The complaints from residents are falling on deaf ears. Management needs to bite the bullet and pay for improvements. You are taking money for a service you are NOT providing. Make it better.
Not very good

Colonial Harbor is not what it appears to be.
It has gone steadily down hill in the last few years.
From activities to maintenance to quality of food their first priority seems to be cutting costs. This is especially evident in the decline of the quality of food. Residents complain but promises of improvement are not kept.
They only pretend to care.
The 5 star review on Yelp is from the manager, which is supposedly against YELP rules. I see he and other staff members have posted 5 star reviews on other sites as well to boost their ratings.
Very dishonest !!! Shame on you.
For the amount residents pay to live here you would think they could at least get decent meals.
Colonial Harbor is not what it appears to be.
Supposedly independent living, it is more like a nursing home.
