Assisted Living

Assisted living communities have the luxury of a sense of community as well as individualized help. Services provided often involve support with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under supervision and assessment. In certain situations, communities may provide “aging in place”, hospice, or respite. Wisconsin maintains specific standards associated with this type of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) licenses this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include information and referral, including personal care, independent living skills, and behavior management. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. Staff must receive education in a number of areas. These areas include job responsibilities, development of service plans, reporting abuse, and community policies and procedures. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system, Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, and when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs, and reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack, therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician, these meals must meet residents special dietary needs, and these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans.
