An assisted living community is a residential living community which offers support, care, and assistance to self-sufficient individuals who do not require skilled nursing services. The services offered often involve help with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, hospice, or continuing care. Wisconsin has a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) regulates this type of community. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include these meals must meet residents special dietary needs, therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician, these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, and communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs, initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition, and the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided. Staff members obtain education in a variety of subjects. These areas include medication management, standard precautions, job responsibilities, and first-aid. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system, and when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision, information and referral, transportation, and activity programming for persons with dementia.
