Assisted Living in Rural Retreat, VA

What Is Assisted Living?

Assisted living is a ongoing senior care option that includes help and support for the activities of daily living such as meals or snacks, bathing, getting dressed and prescription medication management. It is not the same as a nursing home, where residents can expect round-the-clock skilled nursing care. Every assisted living community has its mixture of services, amenities, activities and culture. Many also give assistance for seniors with specific needs such as for example diabetes, incontinence management needs or the first levels of cognitive decline because of dementia or Alzheimer s disease.

Assisted Living Vs. Memory Care

Based on the National Center for Assisted Living, nearly one in four residents currently in assisted living in the state of VA experience Alzheimer s disease or another form of dementia. In addition, many assisted living communities give support for residents with cognitive issues. So how figure out if designated memory care or simply assisted living is what your family member needs?

Although many assisted living communities offer memory care onsite, the two types of care are not the same. Memory care gives full-time specialized support for somebody with dementia while assisted living is designed to meet the requirements of people who want help with the Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as showering, dressing or dining. Assisted living can be a good choice for people in the earlier levels of dementia but for those who have experienced wandering situations or who’ve caused injury to themselves or others, a protected memory care environment is most likely a better choice.

For those who have specific questions relating to what sort of care your loved one requires, speak to a doctor. They will help you determine whether assisted living will continue to work or if you need to seek out memory care. You can also talk to one of our Senior Living Advisors. They have helped many family members with concerns about what kind of care is the best fit for their family member or friend and so they will help you, too.

What Services Are Offered in Assisted Living?

While each community is unique, most assisted living communities provide a variety of living arrangements, a wide range of meal choices, public spaces and free transportation, among other solutions and services. Some examples are:

  • Activities, entertainment and occasions, both on-site and off
  • Workout and wellness programs
  • Housekeeping, including bed-linen services
  • Access to medical professionalls

Assisted Living Inspections and Ratings in VA

The state of VA offers exceptional access to its records for assisted living communities through the Virginia Department of Social Services. Data available to review includes the dates of inspection, whether an inspection was caused by a grievance, whether the inspector found any infractions and what the program of correction was to handle a violation. Look by by community name or zip code to find the communities in the areas you are considering.

In the state of VA, assisted living communities are required for legal reasons to:

  • Allow only two individuals to live in one bedroom
  • Provide handrails, nonskid floors and grab bars in every bathtub and shower
  • Equip all sleeping rooms with connecting restrooms with signaling devices that residents can use in case they want help.

How Much Does Assisted Living Cost in Rural Retreat?

Based on the A Place for Mom Senior Living Cost Index, the normal cost of assisted living in the greater Rural Retreat, VA , metropolitan region in 2018 ranged from $ to $ monthly. Charges for assisted living may differ widely depending on services, amenities and location, so that it pays to search in close by suburbs and locations if you have that flexibility.

The Senior Living Cost Index is based on the actual rates families pay when they move to assisted living in fact it is the only cost index of its kind. To learn more about senior living costs, go to the A Place for Mom Senior Living Cost Planner page.

How to Pay for Senior Living In Rural Retreat, VA

Many family members fund a move to assisted living through the sale of a home or personal savings, however for some people, this may not be an choice. Listed below are three other resources that may help you finance assisted living:

  • Veterans Benefits: Many seniors may be eligible for veterans benefits that they Don’t know about. One benefit specifically, Aid & Attendance, has helped thousands of families afford to pay for assisted living. To be eligible, veterans must be at least 65 years old and have served at least 3 months of active duty, with at least one day during what the Veterans Administration considers active wartime intervals. Qualifying widows and widowers of veterans may also be in a position to receive benefits. With the existing average age of U.S. veterans at 64 years old, it s worth it to find out if your loved one may qualify for benefits. See our Guide to VA Benefits and Long-Term Care for additional information or contact the Virginia Department of Veterans Services or Veterans Information for Virginia to find out more or head to va.gov.
  • Life Insurance Policies. If the senior you are assisting move into assisted living possesses a life insurance policy, you might be able to cash out the plan and obtain funds now. Different restrictions and regulations apply depending on the type of plan you have, so contact a monetary consultant or elder law attorney to discover more about your options and to assess what s best for your position.
  • Reverse Mortgages. For senior couples who may have different needs, a reverse mortgage could be a good way for just one person to move into assisted living while the other remains in the home while his or her spouse transitions to senior living. A reverse mortgage makes it possible for homeowners aged 62 or older to borrow against their home equity. To find out more, get in touch with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to look for a reverse mortgage counseling agency in your area.

For even more ideas about how to finance your move to senior living, contact A Place for Mom to talk to a Senior Living Advisor today. Or find more details on our 5 Best-Kept Secrets to Financing Senior Care page.

5 Questions to Ask an Assisted Living community

Choosing the best assisted living community is an important decision, both for a senior and for his or her family. Here are five points to consider when thinking about making the transition assisted living:

  1. What’s the staff-to-resident ratio? Will this community offer your loved one with the support they need? Based on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 25% of assisted living communities possess a ratio of 1 personal care assistant for each 23 residents. Staffing can vary widely based on the size of the community, so be certain to enquire about the communities you are interested in.
  2. Is there yard? For most residents making the transition from an individual residence to assisted living involves giving up a beloved garden or outdoor space, so the ability to access a gardening area, a patio or a courtyard is normally beneficial. Many larger assisted living communities offer a range of yards, with features such as for example strolling paths, gardens and BBQ spaces for community events.
  3. Just how many staff are available to assist at night? Some assisted living communities provide 24×7 nursing personnel, while others may have more general help on hand after hours. In the state of VA, assisted living communities must have at the least two direct care workers awake and accessible at all times.
  4. Will there be a wait list? Popular communities can fill fast. If the one you like isn’t available, ask about the wait list and what the community s policy is for managing it. Many communities will require a deposit and some communities have internal lists for special treatment needs. Here’s where doing your research can actually pay off — plan in advance!
  5. What services are contained in the monthly charge? Before signing the agreement, it s smart to understand what is included in the basic fee structure and what might incur additional cost. Some communities employ a fee-for-services model, or a la carte pricing, which means they charge a monthly charge for rent and meals but additional charges for things such as medication management. Others could use a tiered pricing model where different levels of care are charged different costs.

For more information about what to search for when going to an assisted living community, check out our Assisted Living Residence Checklist page.

How Do I Choose the Right Assisted Living community?

With so many choices to choose from, finding the right assisted living community can seem like a intimidating task. That s where our Senior Living Advisors will assist — they are knowledgeable in helping match seniors to the services that are the best fit because of their care needs, personality and budget.

Below are a few things to keep in mind at the time of your search:

  • Make sure to look for your family member, not you. Today s assisted living communities offer everything from homey settings to upscale resort-style luxury living. It can be easy to become influenced by the features and experiences you might decide for yourself, but eventually it boils down to what will work best for your family member.
  • Focus on the present, not the past. Does your loved one want help washing and dressing? Do they have special needs like limited vision or special diets? Would they benefit from the benefits of a larger community or be more comfortable in a smaller, more intimate environment?
  • Think about the here and today, not what might have been their choice ten or 15 years back.
  • Plan to tour at least 3 to 5 communities, if you can. Start with planned visits and consider having a meal with the residents. If none of them seems like a good fit, ask your Senior Living Advisor for more choices. And Don’t be reluctant to ask questions and take notes while you re there.

The task of selecting the most appropriate assisted living community could be overpowering, but there are assets that can help. Call A Place for Mom today — we are able to help save you money and time and be sure you make the correct choice.
