Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide residential living communities and aid to people who may need support with taking medication or preparing meals. Assisted living communities frequently offer care supervision, chances for social activity, and aid with the activities of daily life. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer “aging in place”, Alzheimer’s care, or skilled nursing. The state of Texas maintains a number of provisions related to this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities regulates this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, a comprehensive assessment , and interviews, and home visits. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 10 residents. Staff are required to obtain education in a number of fields. These include: resident and provider rights and responsibilities, skills for working with residents, families, and other professionall providers ethics, accessibility requirements, and basic emergency first-aid. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include residents may self-administer their own medication, supervision of a resident’s medication regimen, and returning medications to the proper locked areas. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, and Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision or direct administration of medications, assistance with activities of daily living, personal care, and general supervision or oversight.
