Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer residential living communities and aid to persons who may need help with self-administering medication or dressing. Assisted living communities usually offer assistance with daily activities, care supervision, and opportunities for recreational activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide nursing care, dementia care, or “aging in place”. Texas has a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities licenses this community type. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting residents with taking medications, supervision of a resident’s medication regimen, and returning medications to the proper locked areas. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a comprehensive assessment , interviews, and home visits, and must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths. Staff are required to obtain training in a variety of subjects. These include: resident characteristics (including dementia), financial management, assisted living standards, and confidentiality. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include general supervision or oversight, supervision or direct administration of medications, assistance with activities of daily living, and activity and/or social program for residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, and exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department.
