An assisted living community is an organized living community which administers care, supervision, and aid to medically stable seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities commonly provide care supervision, aid with daily activities, and assistance with transportation and appointments. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, nursing, or “aging in place”. The state of Texas has specific standards related to this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities regulates this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include obtaining medications from a pharmacy, listing the medication taken on a resident’s medication profile record, and residents may self-administer their own medication. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a comprehensive assessment , interviews, and home visits, and must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, and menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Staff members receive training in a number of areas. These include: skills for working with residents, families, and other professionall providers ethics, resident characteristics (including dementia), food and nutrition services, and assisted living standards. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, personal care, general supervision or oversight, and activity and/or social program for residents.
