Assisted living communities offer care, social interaction, and oversight to people who are about 65 years of age or older. The types of service offered often include aid with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide dementia care, continuing care, or respite. The state of Texas has specific statutes associated with this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities supervises this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include returning medications to the proper locked areas, supervision of a resident’s medication regimen, and obtaining medications from a pharmacy. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 10 residents. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. Staff members receive education in a number of areas. These areas include food and nutrition services, basic principles of management, skills for working with residents, and assisted living standards. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as interviews, and home visits, must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, and a comprehensive assessment . This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include general supervision or oversight, supervision or direct administration of medications, activity and/or social program for residents, and personal care. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, and Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan.
