Assisted living communities offer personal care, social interaction, and oversight to people who are around 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities commonly offer opportunities for organized activity, support with daily activities, and aid with appointments and transportation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide dementia care, “aging in place”, or skilled nursing. The state of Texas maintains a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities supervises this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, personal care, general supervision or oversight, and activity and/or social program for residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, and Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as interviews, and home visits, must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, and a comprehensive assessment . This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include supervision of a resident’s medication regimen, residents may self-administer their own medication, and listing the medication taken on a resident’s medication profile record. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. Staff members obtain training in a variety of subjects. These include: confidentiality, skills for working with residents, families, and other professionall providers ethics, community resources, and basic emergency first-aid. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room.
