Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer residential communities and health care for your loved one who may need help with things such as dressing or bathing. The services provided often involve help with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer skilled nursing, dementia care, or hospice. Texas has specific regulations related to this type of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities certifies this community type. Staff are required to obtain education in a number of areas. These areas include accessibility requirements, basic principles of management, confidentiality, and basic emergency first-aid. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal care, assistance with activities of daily living, activity and/or social program for residents, and supervision or direct administration of medications. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, interviews, and home visits, and a comprehensive assessment . Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 10 residents. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan, menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, and exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminders to take medications at the prescribed time, listing the medication taken on a resident’s medication profile record, and obtaining medications from a pharmacy.
