An assisted living community is a residential community which administers support, assistance, and supervision to medically stable individuals who do not need skilled nursing services. The types of service offered often include help with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer hospice, dementia care, or respite. Ohio maintains a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. Ohio Department of Health supervises this community type. Staff must obtain training in a variety of areas. These include: community procedures, securing emergency assistance, residents rights, and job responsibilities. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include handing medications to resident, assistance opening and taking medication, and assistance organizing medication. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medication review, cognitive status review, psychical history, and health history. There must be one bath or shower for every 8 residents and one toilet for every 8 residents. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include intermittent nursing services, supervision, activities, and medication administration.
