Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer coordinated social interaction and apartment style housing as well as individual support. Assisted living communities frequently provide support with daily activities, outings for recreational activity, and care supervision. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, continuing care, or hospice. Ohio maintains specific statutes associated with this kind of community. Ohio Department of Health regulates this type of community. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. There must be one toilet for every 8 residents and one bath or shower for every 8 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include activities, personal care, intermittent nursing services, and assistance with self-administration of medication. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medical diagnoses, health history, cognitive status review, and functional status assessment. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance organizing medication, observation, and reminders. Staff are required to receive education in a number of areas. These include: securing emergency assistance, residents rights, job responsibilities, and community procedures. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare.
