An assisted living community is a residential community which administers assistance, supervision, and support to self-sufficient individuals who do not need skilled nursing support. The types of service offered often involve assistance with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, nursing care, or continuing care. In Montana, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $39,000 . The state of Montana maintains specific standards related to this type of community. Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services regulates this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as ADLs abilities, mood/behavior patterns, cognitive patterns, and health problems. Public assistance is available through the Montana Medicaid Big Sky 1915(C) Waiver program.. . Staff members receive education in a number of subjects. These areas include basic first-aid, an overview of the community's policies and procedures manual, the use of the abdominal thrust maneuver, and services provided by the community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include opening the container lid, assisting residents in drinking fluid to swallow medication, and aid in self-administration of medication. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 4 residents and one bath or shower for every 12 residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include laundry, assistance with ADLs, recreational activities, and 24-hour on-site supervision. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three meals must be provided daily at regular intervals, there can be no more than 14 hours between an evening and breakfast meal, and meals must offer an alternative for food and drink to provide variety.
