Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer residential living communities and health care to your loved one who might need a helping hand with everyday activities such as self-administering medication or cooking food. Assisted living communities frequently provide supervision of care, help with the activities of daily life, and outings for organized activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide skilled nursing, hospice, or respite. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri has a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation governs this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves, a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, and Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, and assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, and communities must provide at least three daily meals. Staff members obtain education in a number of subjects. These include: 24 hours of additional training on assessment on cognitive ability, techniques that are effective in enhancing residents’ choice and control over their environment, (2 hours) of initial training on transfer assistance, and fire safety. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with administration of medications, assistance with recreational activities, protective oversight, and assistance with storage of medications.
