Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide residential living communities and aid for your loved one who might require help with things such as taking medication or dressing. The services offered often involve assistance with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under supervision and assessment. In select situations, communities may provide dementia care, nursing, or respite. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri maintains specific standards associated with this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation licenses this community type. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Staff members receive training in a variety of areas. These include: preservation of resident dignity, abuse/neglect, 24 hours of additional training on assessment on cognitive ability, and 24 hours of additional training consisting of definition and assessment of activities of daily living. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, and an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with administration of medications, assistance with distribution, assistance with recreational activities, and assistance with storage of medications. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, and self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, communities must provide at least three daily meals, and modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided.
