Assisted living communities provide residential living communities and aid for your loved one who need help with everyday activities such as showering or taking medication. Services provided often include help with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under observation and evaluation. In select instances, communities may offer nursing, dementia care, or “aging in place”. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . The state of Missouri has specific statutes related to this kind of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation regulates this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, and communities must provide at least three daily meals. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, and Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, and complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted. Staff must obtain education in a variety of areas. These include: orientation appropriate to job function and responsibilities, promoting independence in activities of daily living, 24 hours of additional training on assessment on cognitive ability, and behavior management. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with administration of medications, assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, assistance with recreational activities, and 24-hour care.
