Assisted living communities usually provide supervision of care, aid with transit and appointments, and aid with the activities of daily life. In certain cases, communities may provide respite, nursing care, or Alzheimer’s care. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri has specific regulations related to this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation licenses this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, and self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living , assistance with distribution, assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, and protective oversight. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, and authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures. Staff members obtain education in a number of areas. These areas include 24 hours of additional training consisting of definition and assessment of activities of daily living, orientation appropriate to job function and responsibilities, mentally confused residents, and communicating with persons with dementia. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, and communities must provide at least three daily meals.
