Assisted living communities provide residential communities and health care for people who need help with cooking food or washing. Assisted living communities usually provide support with the activities of daily life, supervision of care, and opportunities for social activity. In some instances, communities may offer respite, Alzheimer’s care, or hospice. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri has a number of provisions related to this kind of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation certifies this type of community. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, communities must provide at least three daily meals, and modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, and authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with distribution, assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, assistance with recreational activities, and assistance with administration of medications. Staff must obtain education in a number of subjects. These include: 24 hours of additional training on assessment on cognitive ability, abuse/neglect, fire safety, and communicating with persons with dementia. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves, and a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month.
