An assisted living community is a residential community which offers support, supervision, and assistance to self-sufficient individuals who do not need skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities usually provide assistance with daily activities, opportunities for organized activity, and assistance with appointments and transit. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, skilled nursing, or dementia care. The monthly median cost for a private room is around $11,037 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $10,076 . Minnesota maintains a number of provisions associated with this type of community. Minnesota Department of Health, Health Regulations Division, Home Care and Assisted Living Program governs this community type. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver programs (Elderly, Traumatic Brain Injury, Community Alternatives for Disabled Adults, and Community Alternative Care).This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include Periodic opportunities for socialization, reasonable assistance with arranging transportation, weekly housekeeping, and medication administration. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as communities must propose a service agreement or service plan prior to the date on which the prospective resident executes a contract or the date on which he or she moves in, whichever is earlier and assessment by an RN of a prospective resident’s physical and cognitive needs. Staff are required to obtain education in a number of areas. These include: ombudsman services, needs and concerns of elderly and disabled persons, basic infection control, and handling and reporting complaints. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications, the person must demonstrate competence in following the instructions, and the instructions must be written. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include housing with service establishments that use the term assisted living must provide two meals per day.
