Assisted Living

Assisted living communities have the luxury of a sense of community as well as personalized assistance. Assisted living communities often offer help with transit and appointments, care supervision, and opportunities for leisurely activity. In some situations, communities may provide dementia care, "aging in place", or hospice. The monthly median cost for a private room is around $9,292 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $8,373 . Michigan maintains a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Department of Human Services licenses regulates this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications, reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, and medication supervision and administration. Staff are required to receive training in a variety of fields. These areas include safety and fire prevention, staff training program based on the residents' service plans, administration of medication, and personal care. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A comprehensive written assessment that that describes prescribed treatments and medications that must be provided to the community prior to admission, The service plan must be updated annually and following a significant change in health status, service plan identifies the individual's specific needs for care, and The home must complete a service plan in cooperation with each resident and/or their representative. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include being aware of a resident's general whereabouts, guidance, medication management, and reminding resident of important activities to be carried out. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council, and three daily meals and snacks must be provided. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan.
