An assisted living community is a residential community which provides aid, care, and supervision to independent seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing support. The services offered often include assistance with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under observation and evaluation. In select situations, communities may offer hospice, dementia care, or nursing. The annual median cost for a private room is around $91,250 and the cost for a semi-private room is around 82,855. The state of Kentucky maintains specific statutes related to this type of community. The Kentucky Department for Aging and Independent Living regulates this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include communicating with the resident’s physician and pharmacy for prescriptions, reading the medications label, and reminding the resident to take medications. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 5.
