Assisted living communities arrange organized living communities and assistance to seniors who might need support with everyday activities such as washing or self-administering medication. Assisted living communities often offer supervision of care, aid with the activities of daily life, and outings for leisurely activity. In certain cases, communities may provide skilled nursing care, Alzheimer’s care, or hospice. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . Illinois maintains a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health regulates this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include documenting whether or not the resident took the medication, reading the medication label to residents, and only a licensed health care professionall employed by the community may administer medications. Staff must receive education in a variety of areas. These areas include promotion of dignity, neglect prevention, infection control, and independence. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s psychosocial condition, A comprehensive assessment, and evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include emergency response systems, laundry, security, and non-medical services. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 1 residents per room. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program.
