Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which provides care, support, and assistance to independent individuals who do not need skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities often offer aid with daily activities, chances for leisurely activity, and care supervision. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer continuing care, nursing care, or Alzheimer’s care. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . Illinois has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health supervises this community type. In total, there can be no more than 1 residents to a room. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition, assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety, and A comprehensive assessment. Staff are required to receive education in a number of subjects. These areas include independence, resident rights, infection control, and residents’ need and service plans. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include security, medication reminders, laundry, and medication administration. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include supervision of self-administered medications, medication reminders, and documenting whether or not the resident took the medication. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program.
