Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer care, recreational activities, and supervision to individuals around 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities commonly provide care supervision, chances for leisurely activity, and assistance with transportation and appointments. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide nursing, respite, or hospice. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . The state of Georgia maintains a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes certifies this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. Staff members obtain education in a variety of subjects. These areas include including the special needs of residents with dementia, emergency preparedness, assistance with medications, and provision of resident care that is individualized and helpful. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting with an Epi pen, assisting residents with storage of medications, and communities must assist residents with self-administration if requested. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include administration of medications by a certified medication aide, described as personal services, the provision of assisted self-preservation, and assisted living care. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the residents cognitive and behavioral impairments, assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, personal preferences relative to care needs, and whether family supports are available. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program.
