Assisted living communities provide a sense of community as well as individualized assistance. Assisted living communities frequently provide outings for leisurely activity, help with appointments and transit, and care supervision. In some cases, communities may offer continuing care, nursing, or hospice. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. Florida has specific rules associated with this kind of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation certifies this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities , meals must be adapted to residents preferences, meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits, and the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. Staff are required to obtain education in a variety of fields. These include: emergency evacuation, community sanitation procedures, 12 hours of continuing education every 2 years on topics related to assisted living, and resident behavior and needs. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff may take previously dispensed, properly labeled containers from where they are stored and bringing them to the resident, reading the label, and licensed nursing staff may administer medications. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living , assistance with self-administration of medications, nursing services, and personal care services. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , medical examination report, community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community , and communities must document such assessment.
