Assisted living communities offer residential living communities and health care to your loved one who may need help with things such as taking medication or dressing. The types of service offered often involve support with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer skilled nursing, “aging in place”, or respite. In Alabama, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $39,000 . This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include Snacks and beverages must be available throughout the day and after the evening meal, Alternate food selections must be available for residents on medically prescribed diets, communities must serve daily at least three meals, and meals must meet the Dietary Reference Intakes of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council, National Academy of Sciences. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as plan of care developed by the community in cooperation with the resident and, if appropriate, their representative and medical examination by a physician prior to admission. Staff members receive training in a variety of areas. These include: signs and symptoms of dementia, a 20-hour classroom training program, basic first-aid, and needs of the elderly, mentally ill, and intellectually disabled.
