Arts, Culture, Entertainment, and Recreation

As a major city with a pleasant climate, Charlotte has no shortage of indoor and outdoor activities. Plenty of museums call Charlotte home, including museums of art, culture, and history. Designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta, the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art houses works in all mediums by some of the modern masters. The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture is a cultural center focusing on all types of artistic expression celebrating African-American voices. North Carolina’s first art museum, The Mint Museum, is still a popular attraction spanning the artistic histories of various cultures and backgrounds. The Charlotte Museum of History gives insight and information into various cultural groups who have populated the Charlotte area throughout history. If you would like to take full advantage of the mild weather of the Southeast, there are a great number of outdoor attractions in the region to put on your list. Freedom Park is a 98-acre city park and a Charlotte favorite. In the summer, the park hosts free films and music performances, and every September organizes the 5-day Festival in the Park, attracting over 100,000 visitors. The Reed Gold Mine, located just outside Charlotte, is a living history museum constructed around the site of the earliest gold discoveries in the country, where visitors are invited to try their hand at panning for gold. And while it may be a few hours’ drive from the city, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a beautiful, must-see natural destination boasting over 10 million visitors each year.
