Arts, Culture, Entertainment, and Recreation

Surrounded on all sides by the New York Bay and the Hudson River, Jersey City offers panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline which is only a short drive or water taxi away. Also visible from the city is the iconic Statue of Liberty and historic Ellis Island. Both of these famous national landmarks can be visited by water taxi with guided tours available.

Jersey City is home to a vibrant arts and culture scene. The city has a number of exceptional performance art venues including the Loew’s Jersey Theater, which was originally built in the 1920’s. Another popular venue is the historic White Eagle Hall, which was built even earlier in the year 1910. Every summer the Hudson Shakespeare Company hosts the annual Shakespeare festival throughout the city’s various parks.

Jersey City boasts an extensive public library system known as the Five Corners Branch. The city’s library system maintains a number of permanent exhibits as well as space for the fine arts. Some of the permanent exhibitions featured at the libraries include the New Jersey Room, which contains an extensive archive on New Jersey state history, and the Afro-American Historical and Cultural Society Museum. There are also a number of museums in Jersey City related to local history and culture. The Liberty Science Center, located in Liberty State Park, is the state’s first science center and offers interactive exhibits that are fun for all ages. The Museum of Russian Art features a large collection of Soviet nonconformist art spanning from the 1950s to the 1990s.

Transportation

Transportation is abundantly available in Jersey City, with bus and rail lines connecting the region to the rest of the New York City metropolitan area. Rail travel is available through the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail which operates a 24-hour station in Jersey City. The PATH 24-hour rapid transit system also provides rail travel from Jersey City to New York City. Travel within the city limits is available through a number of fixed bus routes that connect to the major transit hubs at Journal Square Transportation Center, Exchange Place, and Hoboken Terminal.
