Nursing Homes

A nursing home is a building that provides lodging to two or more persons who are not related by marriage or by blood to the administrator. This type of community provides its occupants with care administered by registered nurses. These nurses provide healthcare services for seniors who cannot take care of their own needs because of the effects of aging.

This type of community is a familiar and comfortable living option for persons 65 years or older, however nursing homes will commonly admit persons 55 and older seldom heard of in senior care regarding other care types. Types of care services and amenities provided at nursing homes can include home care (like cooking, cleaning, or help with other daily activities), help with shopping and transportation, 24-hour emergency care, and injections. There are some services that may come at a cost to residents which can include cosmetic and grooming items, special care services not included in the community’s Medicaid payment, and specially prepared food. As a resident of a nursing home, you can expect the right to form or participate in resident groups, have your representative notified about your care, get information on services and fees, and be free from abuse and neglect. The most frequent mental issue effecting nursing home residents is dementia, which can hinder their and their sense of familiarity with their surroundings, memory recall, and decision making abilities.
